Pet saved by firecrew

From the archive, first published Friday 1st Jul 2005.

A family pet was saved by a firecrew after falling down an open manhole.

And Keir, a German Shepherd, was back on his feet just minutes after the dramatic rescue.

Keir's owner Glenn Armstrong, of Lutley Mill Road, Halesowen, said: "I was trying to repair a drain outside my house and climbed out of it to talk to a neighbour. Keir was walking round the hole and appeared to catch his foot on the side of the hole, falling down backwards. I tried to get in the hole to calm him down, but there was not much room down there."

Firecrews from Halesowen were called to the scene at 10.15am on Thursday, June 23.

Blue Watch Commander Terry Smith said: "A sheet was wrapped around the dog, to lift him out of the four foot deep hole."

Mr Armstrong said: "He has been extremely lucky, but seems ok. The fire crew were absolutely brilliant - they do more than put fires out."
